Couldn't get lots of good pictures as I forgot to bring my Wireless Triggers for my flash, so all I could do was use CLS, which meant line of sight, which meant I can't fiddle my camera around to get good angles as this would definitely block the CLS signals. But in any case, I had to make do with what I've got, which meant practice some more in case my wireless trigger do fail, which I half heartedly expect them to during a shoot.

Had an outing with the lads for the fireworks. In attendance were Jim747, Airbiscuit, Artyeo and his wife, some two old cool dudes, and CPS and Ber off somewhere taking a different vantage point. Where were we located? I scouted a jetty the day before for our shoot, and sure enough, the two old dudes were there first. We first tried my second location, which was on top of a ridiculously high concrete bridge but found our shots ruined due to the tungsten lamps in our shooting line of sight. Went back to the jetty, joining the other older dudes there, and set up our equipment. With remote cords in hand, cameras mounted on tripods, we were set. I intended to get some focus blur effect but only had a rough idea on how to do it. In the end, I tried makig lots of experimentations to get the timing right just to get a decent image. In all, I succeeded in taking a couple of cool focus blurred shots, which means, for me, it's a great outing.

While talking about camera stuff on our Jing Chew session, a family consisting of an elderly couple and someone that looks like their granddaughter took a table next to ours. The man had an elaborate tattoo which I couldn't keep my eyes away of, and I was surprised that he made small talk to me, which I happily obliged to.
The woman told a story how the tattoo got there, which just piqued my interest some more. It's rare to see an elderly man to have a nice tattoo such as that, it's even rarer to see it on a Bruneian, which made me get up the courage to ask for a photo as I found the story quite remarkable. He agreed, but without a shot of his face.

Wow, such eloquence.
When you insinuate that you might want to "slap" my "grateful parents", you've just opened a can of worms there buddy. I've known a lot of good people coming from ITB, and they have moved on to contribute to the nation after going through the programs offered at ITB. But to say their parents are "stupids" and "bitter" just because their children didn't get offered the chance to go abroad (that the writer might have squandered, by looking at his thought process) is beyond what is considered proper opinion.
Who's better is not in debate here. With that, please, do sound off. I like to sample your opinion.

After a tipoff in the forums about a Capoeira showcase at ICC, we all grabbed a chance in capturing this unique event. Graced by the guest of honor, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the event saw a packed hall mainly curious about the art of Capoeira. By the end of the event, the crowd was thrilled by acrobatic skills of the performers that night.

I arrived way too early, but that ensured I get good parking, but mostly to check the light levels that's available to me. Worked good without flash, but I made sure to ask the performer regarding flash use. While ok for the most part, he told us it's better not to have the flashes going off during his acrobatic moves. Which for the most part was ok, as I had a good ambient light reading anyway. Above, you can see how it was without no flash, taken during their last minute preparation.
Set the White Balance to Tungsten, and gel my flash for that, and for the most part, the shots looked great, considering I didn't have my monopod.

During noon, we took a breather from the ongoing netball games and went for lunch. Passed by HSBC Serusop, where they had the HSBC Funday going on. After we filled our stomachs, we filled our SD cards.

After having a rough day the day before, it's good to know that a brief stint of photography outing can restore the cheer in me. Wasn't really looking forward to it considering, but it turned out great for me, and I get to practice before an actual event that's coming up, and I get to practice some Strobist techniques.
While I can't replicate some of the techniques I've read up on Strobist, as there was no overhang behind the net, and sticking it clost to mid court was impossible as well due to the heavy traffic of people and the refs officiating the game. There was only one or two metres clearance from the sideline to the walls, so space was limited. Improvise? There's a ledge right near the net area to one side which extends to a doorway which was not used, and as it was right in the corner, I know I won't block the view of the spectators. You can see it in my second shot. I aimed it at around the middle of the half court on a tripod, so the light would be evenly spread from the net at its nearest end, and will at least tickle the light above ambient on the other end.
The other strobe was on the light stand as far away from the action as possible right at the corner. This pointed at the same area as well. Was triggering with my G.I. remotes, but intermittently, the flashes will not fire. This could be time to replace the batteries in the receivers, and also I would need to mod the receivers so it can fire at a higher percentage when I'm at the other end of the court.
Free movement around the court, and armed with f/2.8s, ISO800, I got quite good results. Grainy as heck, but it looks oh so crisp and detailed. I might go and do some aggressive NR with these pics in the future. Here's a selection of pictures in portrait form.
